MWDM (Medium Wavelength Division Multiplexing) is an optical communication technology designed to balance bandwidth, cost, and deployment complexity. Positioned between CWDM (20nm channel spacing) and DWDM (100GHz/50GHz spacing), MWDM typically uses 150GHz or 200GHz channel spacing, supporting 8-16 wavelengths across the C-band or C+L bands.
It leverages mature filtering technology to multiplex/demultiplex multiple data streams over a single optical fiber, enabling medium-bandwidth expansion (e.g., 10G/25G per channel) without the high cost of DWDM or the bandwidth limitations of CWDM.
